Bolsonaro taken into custody after being considered a risk of fleeing
Bolsonaro has been detained after authorities found he posed a serious risk of fleeing while under home confinement.
The one-time leader was sentenced of orchestrating a military coup in the ninth month and given more than 27 years in incarceration, but he continued under house arrest pending legal challenges.
Top Judicial Official Alexandre de Moraes said the move to detain the septuagenarian politician was a safety action after fresh information emerged.
This involved seeking to disable his electronic bracelet and a invitation to a supporters' gathering that could facilitate a chance to flee".
Judicial Records Show Escape Concerns
In a filing authorising the custody, the judge said information from the facility tracking the former president's confinement suggested the former leader's aim to disable the electronic ankle bracelet to ensure success in his flight.
This, it said, would be assisted by the disorder caused by the gathering called by his offspring.
His child, Flávio, who serves as a senator, called for a gathering of his backers near the former president's residence to take place on Saturday evening.
The senator wrote on social media on the previous day: Will you battle for your nation, or observe everything from your smartphone there on your sofa? I invite you to fight with us."
He said the vigil would be so followers could seek divine intervention for his physical condition and for the restoration of democratic rule in our country."
Embassy Asylum Concerns
Part of Justice Moraes's ruling was the chance of his move to foreign missions near the residence, considering that the inquiries revealed a record of planning to ask for protection through a embassy office", a announcement said.
The legal document highlights that the United States embassy in the national capital, the capital city, is positioned around 13km from Bolsonaro's home.
International Reactions
Bolsonaro's legal woes have provoked anger from fellow populist conservative United States President Donald Trump, prompting him to implement a fifty percent tax on imports of Brazilian goods.
Bolsonaro is being held in a national police facility in the capital and will have a detention review on the following day.
Recent Judicial Appeals
It was only on last Friday that the ex-leader's attorneys asked the Supreme Court to allow him to fulfill his full incarceration period under home confinement, with digital surveillance.
They also asked that the former president be authorized to depart his residence for medical treatment, saying he required ongoing care for pulmonary infections and other illnesses.
Background on Conviction
He was determined responsible of leading a scheme aimed at retaining his authority after he lost the 2022 election to his ideological adversary, Lula.
High Court judges said that he knew of a plot which encompassed plans to kill his opponent and his vice-presidential running mate, his vice-presidential candidate, and to detain and kill Alexandre de Moraes - the High Court judge who has been overseeing his judicial proceedings.
The scheme was prevented because it didn't receive the support of the military leaders. The current president was inaugurated without issue on 1 January 2023.
But a seven days after, on 8 January, numerous Bolsonaro supporters stormed and vandalised official structures in the federal district, the capital city.
The police took action and around approximately 1,500 persons were detained.
The magistrates found that the rioters had been provoked by the former president whose plan, they said, was for the national armed forces to intervene, bring back stability and reinstate his authority.
At the moment, Bolsonaro's lawyers called the 27 years and three months sentence extremely harsh.
He was also prohibited from campaigning for office until the year 2060 - eight years after the completion of his term.
The former president called the court case a political persecution and said it was intended to stop him participating in the next presidential race.
