Crawley Unaware of Captain Stokes' Provocative 'Weak Men' Comments

The English opener Zak Crawley suggested he had no knowledge of statements from skipper Stokes regarding the team environment not being "those lacking fortitude".

Stokes made this message in multiple conversations following his team's defeat in the second Ashes versus Australia previously.

In the lead-up to the third Test, where England are staring at a series loss with a match to spare, Stokes stated he had allowed his message to "drift around" within the playing group.

"I've done the necessary discussions over the past two days that I needed to have done," remarked the England leader.

But, after the opener scored 85 on the fourth day in the third Test, he commented: "I missed those remarks."

"I wasn't actively searching for it. We take everything that is said in the media with some skepticism," Crawley continued.

Frank Discussions and Steady Philosophy

Stokes issued his "fragile individuals" observation subsequent to England were beaten in Brisbane to fall two matches behind.

The team subsequently went on a holiday to a Queensland resort between the second and the upcoming matches.

Prior to this match, he revealed his players had held "honest" talks and he had asked them to "show a bit of dog" in their effort to remain in contention in the series.

Yet, the Kent batsman asserted the guidance from the captain and head coach McCullum had stayed consistent with their previous tenure in charge.

"The atmosphere has been very positive, the same as always," said the opener. "It's just trying to be optimistic, playing our brand, with lots of freedom. We believed we were capable of something special entering this Test."

The Hosts On the Verge of Rapid Ashes Triumph

The opener's dismissal on day four was part of a decisive three-wicket burst by Australian off-spinner Nathan Lyon.

Lyon's triple strike in 20 deliveries – he also bowled Brook and Stokes himself – meant England 207-6 in pursuit of a daunting target of 435.

Consequently, the home team need four wickets on the final day to move to an insurmountable 3-0 lead after three matches played.

Defeat would prolong the English team's drought in Australia to 18 Tests and ensure a fourth successive away Ashes series loss.

This series is set to be decided in only 11 days of play – after England fell the initial matches in rapid time respectively.

The last time 1921, when the Australians completed a series win in England in eight days, has the outcome of the Ashes urn been determined more swiftly. Australia have also won in eleven days on two other instances in the modern era.

"This is disheartening," admitted Crawley. "Our goal was to win the Ashes and we're facing elimination at this point."

"There will still be plenty to play for and we will definitely view it like that," he continued.

"It's been tough. Australia is a very, very good team. It was always going to be tough touring here to face them. They were the favourites and they've proven why."

Ollie Pope's Position Under Scrutiny

While the opener's performance in Adelaide likely secures questions about his short-term future in the England team, Ollie Pope looks under threat for his spot in the Melbourne Test on Boxing Day.

Pope was out for 17 in England's second knock on day four, extending his poor record against the old enemy.

Across 16 Ashes innings, Pope has never made a half-century and averages 17.62.

A solitary other England player in over a century – Dennis Amiss – has featured as many times in the top order in Ashes Tests and returned a poorer average.

But, the opener insisted any notion his teammate is under the microscope originates with "you guys" – meaning the journalists – "and not within the team."

"We all know how good of a player he is," added he. "He has had a productive year if I'm honest."

"He has produced some really good knocks. It is noise externally. There's no discussion of that nature on Ollie in the camp," Crawley finished.
