Fresh analysis indicates that people who discontinue popular weight-loss injections like Wegovy and Mounjaro may regain reduced body mass at a significantly accelerated pace than those who stop traditional diet and exercise plans.
Findings released in a major health publication points out that while obese individuals often shed substantial amounts of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the weight returns at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month after stopping.
"People using these treatments must be aware of the potential of fast rebound weight gain when the treatment ends," stated lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.
Such speed of recovery means a return to pre-treatment mass within about a year and a half.
Analyzing Treatments
The analysis, which examined 37 of trials involving thousands of patients, compared the outcomes of the injectable medications with conventional dieting.
Scientists point out that people who shed pounds through diet and exercise usually experience a slower creep back—approximately 100 grams monthly—after stopping.
Understanding the Rapid Regain
Doctors propose the mode of action of the injections explains the amplified weight return.
These medications mimic a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which moderates hunger.
"Artificially providing GLP-1 concentrations far above than normal could lead to the system to generate a reduced amount of its own natural GLP-1, and may also lessen responsiveness to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics researcher.
"Stopping of this GLP-1 'fix' means hunger is unsuppressed, making overeating a significant risk."
An Ongoing Condition?
The NHS advise the injections for people with weight-linked health risks, alongside prescribed diet and exercise modifications.
Many experts say that, given the high risk of weight regain, the therapy should be considered long-term.
This opinion is reinforced by pharmaceutical companies, who say that the findings "emphasize the chronic nature of obesity," similar to managing diseases like diabetes.
Patient Testimonies
Users who have come off the jabs describe a powerful return of cravings.
"It felt as if something flipping and I was suddenly starving," said an individual.
The struggle is exacerbated if patients have not established permanent dietary or behavioural modifications during therapy.
Widespread Use
Survey data indicate that millions of people in the UK have tried these injections in the last 12 months, with interest continuing to grow.
- Adoption is greater among females compared to males.
- The middle-aged demographic shows the greatest usage rates.
- Many obtain the medications through private healthcare rather than public health services.
In conclusion, experts caution that while these medications are powerful tools for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone solution and lasting health benefits hinges on integrated behavioural support.
