During an first day in office, Zohran Mamdani committed to “reinvent” America's largest city, promising “a fresh chapter” and an audacious commencement to his term.

A Groundbreaking Mayor

The young democratic socialist, who just a year ago remained a relatively obscure state assemblyman, has become the city's first mayor of South Asian descent. He also made history by being the first to be sworn in using the Qur'an.

“A time such as this comes rarely and rarer still is it that the people themselves whose hands are upon the mechanisms of progress,” Mamdani added.

Ignoring counsel to lower expectations, the mayor was emphatic: “I will do no such thing. The only expectation I seek to reset is that of small expectations. Beginning today we will lead with courage and vision.”

Steering by Socialist Principles

Mamdani openly embraced his political ideology. “I was elected as a socialist leader and I will govern as one. I will not forsake my principles for worry of being called extreme,” he said to rapturous applause.

The swearing-in was a dual event, beginning with a late-night oath-taking in a old subway station. He was formally sworn in on the front steps of city hall by Vermont independent senator Bernie Sanders, who praised Mamdani's rise as a victory over the status quo.

An Ambitious Policy Agenda

Mamdani now faces one of the most demanding jobs in American politics, with a agenda promising:

• Subsidized daycare
• Fare-free public buses
• A rent freeze for nearly 1 million households
• A experiment of municipally-operated grocery stores

The estimated $10 billion cost of these programs may be challenging to fund. Mamdani has pledged to tax more heavily the city's top earners and corporations. However, as a municipality subject to the state government, he will require the cooperation of Governor Kathy Hochul.

Managing Political Challenges

The new mayor will deal with skepticism from some members of the Jewish community concerned about his past comments regarding Israel. Tensions were revealed during the transition when a senior aide resigned over offensive past comments.

Mamdani has moved to ease these concerns by persuading Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch to remain, avoiding the appearance of losing a top Jewish official.

On the national stage, former President Donald Trump has called Mamdani a “communist” and warned of withholding government money. Despite this, a recent meeting between the two was reportedly surprisingly friendly.

The Core Tests of Leadership

Traditionally, New York mayors are judged on their success in delivering basic services: sanitation, reducing the rat infestation, fixing potholes, and ensuring smooth transit service.

Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams touted his administration's public safety record, citing historically low numbers of murders and shootings in 2025, with murders reported.

As his work starts, Mamdani and his wife will move from their Astoria apartment to the stately Gracie Mansion. The previous occupant offered a unusual warning about a reputed resident spirit in the home, which allegedly only haunts those who do not act to “do right by the city.”

Mamdani concluded his speech with a direct statement: “The work has only just begun.”
